Penelope Kitten celebrates her day with her very own … P’s Picks!
Cynthia: Hey Penelope! Come pose for a picture for Black Cat Appreciation Day.
Marcy (pouting): I can’t believe it. Penelope kitten gets her own day?
Marcy: We have to appreciate her all day? She’s going to be so full of herself.
Penelope Kitten very solemnly perches on the red pillow and poses very seriously for the camera.
Cynthia: It’s okay Penelope. You can smile.
Penelope Kitten continues to look very serious.
Cynthia (taking photos): Smile P! click click click C’mon. Smile! click click click Why so serious, Penelope?
Penelope Kitten pulls out a crumpled piece of paper and begins her speech.
penelope kitten (clearing her throat): ahem… ahem… ahem…
in honor of black cat appreciation day i appreciate many things. they are…
my pink paper ball
my dry crunchy treats
my big brother, tabby cat Hamlet, who is always nice to me and gives me his food
my mom, Cindy, for failing to find me a home even though she tried really hard
my dad, Freddy, for giving me belly rubs
my big sister, Marcy, for giving me advice and sharing her sunspots
Marcy: Gasp. I never share my sunspots. You take them.
Cynthia: Ah, Marcy…
Marcy: It’s true. And Hamlet doesn’t give her his food. She takes it from him.
penelope kitten: and so. in conclusion. i am the luckiest kitty in the world to have such a wonderful family who loves me too.
happy black cat appreciation day.
Marcy: Plus, she’s so stupid she got the meaning of the day backwards.
Cynthia (teary eyed): Ah, Penelope… instead of us appreciating you – you are appreciating us! You are just the sweetest…
Cynthia rushes over to Penelope and gives her kitty smooches. Penelope Kitten gloats and purrs.
Marcy (grumbling under her breath): She’s so manipulative. And everyone falls for it. Hmpf.
penelope kitten: i’ll give you a kitty kiss, marcy.
Marcy: Yuck. Keep your kitty spit away from me!
Marcy races off to the other room.
penelope kitten: i win. #blackcatsrule.

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day!
my post from last year about the origins of Black Cat Appreciation Day.
Cynthia: In honor of Black Cat Appreciation Day, I thought I would share some favorite black cat pictures I found on the internet.
|Cute Black Cat
Cynthia: Black cats are statistically the least adoptable cat and the most likely euthanized cat in shelters.
|Artsy Black Cat
“stay away from my cat, dude”
Cynthia: It is difficult to understand why since their temperament is very sweet, affectionate, and loyal. But we saw it ourselves when we were trying to adopt out our black rescue kitten, Penelope, with her Tortie sister, Muffin. Everyone wanted Muffin. No one even looked at Penelope.
Cynthia: So we decided to keep Penelope! Yay! She’s ours now!
Cynthia: Black cats have it really rough out there. They are oddly considered by many to bring bad luck. Some people even think they are evil. Many shelters and cat rescues stop adopting out black cats during the month of October to prevent them from being the subject of horrific tricks or used in sacrifice rituals.
Marcy: What is WRONG with people, Cindy?
Cynthia: I wish I knew, Marcy. But enough gloom. Aren’t black cats ADORABLE?!!!
|Another Cute Black Cat|
Cynthia: Let’s go tell Penelope Kitten how much we appreciate her!
Marcy: I don’t appreciate her. She whaps me on the head. I don’t appreciate that. It makes me mad.
Cynthia: Oh Marcy, she’s a kitten. She’s trying to be your friend and she just needs a little guidance. C’mon, I’ll go tell her for you.

*Interesting Note On The Origin Of Black Cat Appreciation Day: It was started in 2011 by Wayne Morris as a Facebook campaign to raise awareness of the plight of black cats and as a way to honor his sister and her beloved 20 year old black cat. His sister passed away from cancer on August 17 at the young age of 33. Her black cat had passed away two months before. Wayne’s Facebook page For The Love Of Black Cats (Black Cat Appreciation Day) now has over 94,000 followers. Awareness raised? Meowza!
|All Black Cats Are Not Alike Kickstarter Campaign|
Cynthia: I was perusing the awesome Kate Benjamin’s Hauspanther site and I came across her post about Studio Goldsparkle’s kickstarter campaign.
Studio Goldsparkle is campaigning to create an illustrated book about black cats called, All Black Cats Are Not Alike.
|Mockup of All Black Cats Are Not Alike|
Cynthia: So Peter Arkle is an amazing illustrator whose work appears in Time Magazine and the New Yorker, and Amy Goldwasser is a super talented editor and writer. They love cats and will feature 50 distinct black cats in their book.
One of the rewards is a chance to nominate a black cat to join the All Black Cat Casting Call. Winners of the casting call will be featured in the book. Isn’t that so fantastic?
Marcy (shrugging): Not really.
Cynthia (excitedly): Aw c’mon! Guess who I’m nominating?
Marcy (exasperated): But I’m not a black cat. I’m white cat with black markings. Sometimes I wonder about your powers of observation.
Cynthia: Oh… uh… I meant that I’m nominating Penelope Kitten.

penelope kitten (squeaking): me?
Marcy: Gasp. You wouldn’t.
Cynthia: Why not? It would be a great opportunity for Penelope Kitten if she were chosen. Don’t you want our Pkitty to be just as famous as you?
penelope kitten (squeaking loudly): photo shoot playtime!
Penelope Kitten excitedly hops and flops and crashes into Marcy trying to figure out her best side for photos.
penelope kitten: this is my best side. no this is. no this. wait. this is the best…
|this no this how about this wait this is the best|
Marcy is disgusted. She stalks off, whipping her tail back and forth.
Cynthia: Ahhhhh… Marcy… where are you going in such a huff?
Marcy: Off to start my own Kickstarter campaign. It’s an interactive media project called Big Sister Revenge.
*Only a few days left to contribute and nominate your favorite black cat to Goldsparkle’s Kickstarter campaign for ALL BLACK CATS Are Not Alike.
The deadline is 11am Thursday, February 26th.
They’re getting close to their goal! Good luck, Studio Goldsparkle!

Cynthia is gushing at the computer.
Cynthia: Awww… Marcy… look at this illustration. It just says it all, doesn’t it? My heartbeat is in cat form ’cause I love you soooooo much…
Marcy starts to gag.
Cynthia (still fixated on the cat heartbeat): Awwww…
Marcy continues to gag.
Cynthia (still gushing): Awwww…
Cynthia impulsively scoops up Marcy in her arms to give her a kitty kiss.
Cynthia: Smooch smooch smooch …
Marcy throws up a hairball on Cynthia’s arm just as Penelope Kitten rushes into the room with an important announcement.
penelope kitten: someone missed the litterbox.
Cynthia (sniffing): I thought I smelled something.
Marcy (outraged): When are you going to learn how to use the litterbox, Penelope?!
penelope kitten: wasn’t me.
Marcy: Yes it was! You’re the only one who misses. You do it on purpose, don’t you?
penelope kitten: maybe. maybe not.
Marcy: It’s not polite and it’s not sanitary.
penelope kitten: maybe. maybe not. maybe. maybe not.
Penelope Kitten reaches up to shred the arm off the sofa just as Marcy pushes off Cynthia to catapult herself onto the screen door and then onto Penelope Kitten’s back.
The two cats race off at top speed while knocking over everything in their path including a vintage lamp, a potted plant, and the TV.
Cynthia surveys her demolished house and torn Anthropologie sweater and then checks her cat heartbeat again.
She wonders what it would be like to have goldfish for pets instead of cats.
