Cat Handbag Goes Mainstream At Moggy Mothership

Cynthia struts around like she is in a fashion show. She is humming cheesy disco songs.

Cynthia (excitedly):  Hey Marcy, don’t you think I could totally rock this kitty handbag?!

Marcy:  No.

Cynthia (incredulously):  You don’t think I would look totally “supa fly”, rockin’ this kitty bag?!

Marcy:  No.

Cynthia (unbelieving):  C’mon. You don’t think I would totally look too cool for school carrying around this cat bag?!

Cynthia strikes a pose.

Marcy:  No. In fact, I often wonder how you survived the mean girls of seventh grade.

Cynthia (suddenly solemn): Here’s my advice on surviving 7th grade. When you are walking around the halls thinking you look groovy with Hello Kitty stickers stuck to your face and a bad perm, NEVER EVER turn down a mean girl’s request to do a makeover on you. Because really, she’s probably only trying to help. And…maybe… you might look really great with heavy black eyeliner and caked on electric blue eye shadow while playing dodgeball in your tube socks and gym shorts! How would you know unless you tried?

Cynthia starts grooving down a pretend catwalk again.

Cynthia (stopping):  Oh! And NEVER EVER admit that the Bee Gees are your fave band. Now, excuse me while I decide whether to purchase this totally rad cat bag.

Marcy:  Gag me with a spoon.

Cynthia, purchase the bag. If it starts to lose its shape you can stick Marcy in it like a shoe tree.

Aaaah! I just read the above comment. Poor Marcy! : )

I think that bag is super cute. I say buy what makes you happy. I just bought a gnome sweater from Modcloth last week. My gnome sweater is my new favorite thing. I bet that cat purse might be yours.

Fun decision! I cannot wait to see what you decide! I think you could rock that purse!

And mean girls suck! They should go to a separate school. I feel like I am reliving it all over again with a teenage girl. Not fun!

Cheers to growing up! Now we can wear our gnome sweaters and cat bags and realize we should always do what makes us happy. Now how do I teach that to my daughter?

Yay! Gnome sweaters and cat purses! I can't wait to see you in your gnome sweater!

Total ugh that your daughter is going through it. You know, I really was never bothered too much by the mean girls because I really was in my own head a lot about what I thought was cool. I actually felt bad for them – and my friends who wanted to be part of their pack. The pressure to conform and not make a mistake just looked too stressful to be bothered. I hear it is a lot worse now though. From what you have written about your daughter, she sounds really cool and like she has a very intelligent head on her shoulders so I bet she will get through it fine.

There is a short film by Sophia Coppola called Lick The Star about 7th grade that is really good. I think you can You Tube it.
