I Drive Myself Crazy

Cynthia is perusing the Internet. Procrastinating of course. When all of a sudden she yells at the computer.

Cynthia:  UGH. Again?! Really?!

Marcy:  What?!!

Cynthia (shaking her head):  This always happens. ALWAYS.

Marcy:  What?

Cynthia:  Here’s the scenario:  I am innocently reading an article on Racked.com about the opening of Nasty Gal’s retail store in West Hollywood.

So I mosey on over to their infamous online store to check them out. I see a nice skirt here and cute pair of pants there – all for reasonable prices. You know, $68… $88… when all of a sudden BAM – up pops the most darling denim blouse –

My heart skips a beat and soars. I breathlessly click on the image to get a closer look and then … THUD… my hearts drops to the floor because …

Alice McCall Paloma Blouse

Cynthia:  That darling denim blouse is $265.

Marcy:  Yikes.

Cynthia:  Yes. But then I glance over to the image next to it and the same exact thing happens again. I see a darling denim jumpsuit by the same designer that looks like a dress. It’s so original and so cute I get butterflies in my stomach.

Alice McCall Paloma Overalls

Marcy:  Don’t tell me. You click on the image for a closer look and are astonished at the price and your heart goes thud again.

Cynthia:  Yes.

Marcy:  At least you’re predictable.

Cynthia (gloomily):  Those overalls are $430.

Marcy:  Double yikes.

Cynthia:  Anthropologie carries a few expensive items along with their regular merchandise too. And I am always always ALWAYS so startled by the price. Take for instance their Snowberry Ball Skirt.

It’s $495.

Anthropologie’s Snowberry Ball Skirt

Cynthia:  I mean the name alone… Snowberry Ball Skirt… is swoon worthy. Sigh… And then there is this beauty –

Anthropologie’s Midnight Romance Midi Dress

Cynthia:  The Midnight Romance Dress. For $565. Sigh…  $565… sigh…

And the thing is, every single one of these items is either sold out or almost sold out. Every single one, Marcy. Every. Single. One.

Marcy:  So no hope of them ever reaching sale.

Cynthia (mooning about):  No hope… no hope…

Marcy: You just have to face the fact that you have couture taste on a Kmart budget.

I am so with you. There are so many items that I loved that sold out at a super high price tag and I will be honest, I never ever saw them popback. I swooned over the Jane Car Coat, but it sold out at $395. And recently that plaid shift dress sold out for close to $300. Sigh. It just was not meant to be. I love that denim blouse so hard for you. It would be perfection on you. I am not helping, am I? ; ). Maybe you will have better odds than me and score it on sale!

Wow! Love that denim top and the ball skirt. The sad thing is people who can afford that stuff wear it once or never and forget about it.

    • Reply MarcyVeryMuch November 27, 2014 at 1:46 am

they should give it to me, then!

To make you feel better, the blouse looked a little cow-girlish and the jumpsuit looked like hippie/mom. And it would be difficult to keep the hem off the floor when you used the restroom. So, money well-saved.
I did LOVE the Anthropologie things, but expensive even at half the price.

i see what you are saying but i think if they are worn with more urban items then they would not look so cowgirl. although, sometimes a little cowgirl is fun!

K-Mart Kouture, indeed. I'm right there with you. That denim jumpsuit is super adorable, though. It's perfectly you. You rock wide leg pants like no one else, so it almost seems cruel that they're so overpriced.

I've read that Anthropologie is going to start carrying more high fashion designers. That means we can be startled and heartbroken even more often! Yay for even more pieces we can't afford that will be torturing us alongside slightly less expensive pieces that just pale in comparison.

I'm so smitten with that Snowberry Ball Skirt. Whimsical. In vibrant shades and pretty pastels. That full ballgown silhouette…*sigh* Get over it, Liz. Get over it, Cynthia. It's not going to happen for us.

On the plus side, you did just score that dropwaist beauty. Focus on that, and I'll focus on my tulle skirt! Then maybe we can distract ourselves from going crazy for a wee bit longer.

Thank you, Liz! You have the best advice. I knew you would love the Snowberry Ball skirt too.
That is interesting about Anthro carrying more high end designers. I wish my eye didn't always go the the most expensive item. Ah well. It is fun to look at the beauties.

Oh well, maybe this only means that you're developing an eye for the good stuff? I'm not too keen on Anthro stocking even *more* expensive things, even their "regular" stuff is on the pricey side in the UK, where we pay import tax on every item too. It *is* a shame, because those two denim items especially look like they'd be perfect for you. But yeah, there's just a limit to what normal folks like us can pay for clothes, and maybe that's just as well… Maybe ModCloth or someone else will end up selling similar items – even Forever 21 can have good knockoffs sometimes! There are also tailors who can make all sorts of things for you for cheapies if you show them photos – my wedding dress cost me under £200 to have custom made with bead embroidery from a Chinese lady with the tiniest dress shop. I'm sure floral denim overalls would be a lot cheaper!

Interesting idea to get something custom made. And you are so right about stores knocking off the designer items. It always happens! So even if I can't afford it this year, it may just be available in a year from another store. Speaking of wedding dresses – this happened with my wedding dress. It was an ABS knock off of a black Isaac Mizrahi dress that Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the opening of a play. It was when fit and flares dresses were first coming back in style. I couldn't believe it when I found it in white at ABS.
