Cynthia: Because I did not.
That’s the latest news.
Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a third grader living in England with her parents, twin sister, and pet cat named Charmmy.
For the past 40 years.
Please excuse me while I attempt to pick myself off of the floor and go about my everyday existence.
Even though nothing makes sense anymore and I am now not sure if I am really me.
Maybe I’m a cat.
Cynthia wanders off in a foggy haze of confusion, bewilderment, and existential angst.
Marcy: Wow. And I thought I was dramatic.
Marcy resumes chewing her toenails which was what she was doing before the weight of the whole world fell on top of Cynthia’s head.
*The Los Angeles Times broke the story here. And, you can find Hello Kitty’s official (albeit soul questioning) biography on the Sanrio site here.

Mind blown. No. I had no idea. And you know what? I am going to pretend that is not true. I cannot have my whole childhood scrambled up by a weird truth. I told my son this this morning and his face twisted up in confusion. Based upon his reaction, I will not be revealing the news to my daughter. Now must get coffee. I seem to have lost my mind.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of such strange news. Maybe I shouldn't have told you. But it's better to be told something like this by someone who loves you rather than from someone else. It's all over the news. You would have heard about it eventually. I have not fully digested this yet either. My mind – as yours – is still lost. Hopefully we will come to terms with this sooner rather than later. 😉

you two need to get a grip.

What?! That is so odd. I will have to read the article. She sure looks like a kitty to me.
You know, I will just have her be a kitty in my mind.
Have a great day,
Stacey
That's what I am thinking too. We can be in denial together and forever!
😉

And next I suppose you'll tell us there is no tooth fairy.
i already told you that!

Well I guess just because your last name is Kitty doesn't mean you are one. I guess Michael J. isn't really a Fox then?
Oh no. He's a turtle.

Ceci n'est pas un chat…
Whoa. I'm having my trouble wrapping my mind around that one…
LOL. I think we all are!

Hmmm…I think I liked it better when I thought she was a Japanese cat. I also thought Sanrio could've been a bit more creative with her last name, and the apple pie thing is just weird..lol 🙂
I know! Apple pie seems so American and yet she's English. The whole thing is just so weird. Including our collective reaction to it. I have had some of the most bizarre conversations about it on Facebook. I think it is just a fun distraction. We are so hungry for fun things to talk about in the world lately.

I just heard this, too! NPR did a feature on her. It was short and sweet, but it was cool to learn a bit of the history of this character, especially the evolution of her branding and how her image has been stamped on everything imaginable. I didn't realize she'd been around for so long, I guess because she's targeted to girls and tweens, so she always seems fresh and up-do-date for the next generation. But she's also something several generations of girls are nostalgic about. That's the mark of a successful character, I guess. She's current and timely, but she's nostalgia-inducing and timeless. I had always thought she was a cat, too. We'll just ignore the cat ears a whiskers, I guess? lol

Oh Liz – I remember when I was in 5th grade and Hello Kitty was first introduced – back in the '70's. LOL. I loved her and Snoopy. I am going to have to check out NPR. I didn't realize that they did a feature on her. thank you for letting me know!
