National Feral Cat Day gets a new name. …
8am. Monday October 16th, 2017.
Penelope Kitten joyously bounds into the kitchen where Cynthia and Marcy are breakfasting. She is dragging a boom box.
She grabs the cereal spoon out of Cynthia’s mouth and hits play on the Talking Heads “Wild Wild Life.”
penelope kitten (squeak singing into the spoon): ‘i’m wearing fur pajamas.”
Penelope Kitten shimmies her hips and belly.
penelope kitten: “i’ve got some news to tell ya.”
Penelope Kitten performs the running man.
penelope kitten: “bout some wild, wild life.”
Cynthia and Marcy: Oh! Right! It’s National Feral Cat Day!
penelope kitten: nope. they rebranded. it’s now Global Cat Day.
Marcy: Whatever. Every single year on October 16th we talk about feral cats and how TNR (trap/neuter/release) is the only humane way to stabilize the cat overpopulation blah blah blah. We talked about it here here here and here.
Cynthia: We have to keep talking about it, Marcy. We have to keep talking about it because it’s working!
Marcy: That’s what you said last year.
Cynthia: And, we’ll keep saying it and advocating for TNR laws and protective laws for community cats until the entire United States is on board. For example, we are thisclose to getting the TNR injunction lifted here in Los Angeles! This means that the city will be able to support our TNR efforts, which will be a huge help and relief.
Everywhere you look you will find TNR being implemented to help out our community cats.
It’s not difficult to find help if you stumble across a feral cat community in need. Simply Google search “cat rescue” or “TNR” in your area or contact Alley Cat Allies for local resources.

*TNR efforts really have ramped up over the past 10 years – all over the US. It’s like a race that now no longer feels like a hopeless slog but one in which the finish line may actually come into sight soon so we run faster and more efficiently.
Thank you to all the local cat rescue organizations out there, the national cat rescues, and individual trappers and community caregivers.
Seriously, if you see a problem – do a cat rescue Google search for your area and/or contact Alley Cat Allies or Best Friends for resources and advice.

It’s nice to hear we are making progress and good things are happening somewhere, in at least one sphere in the world (the news has been unbearable this week)… Cindy, thanks for all of the amazing work you, and everyone else involved in TNR, do!

This is great! I’m glad to hear they’re lifting the injunction. You would think TNR would lead to fewer feral cats, which would lead to fewer potential songbird predators.
Exactly. The bird people are completely unreasonable. They are the ones who got the injunction passed here in Los Angeles without even doing any research. We are not out of the woods yet – still fighting to get the injunction lifted.
