It’s Hot And I’m Wearing A Fur Coat: 10 Tips For Cooling Down Your Cat

Marcy Loses Her Cool

Marcy (yelling):  I’M SO HOT.

Cynthia (concerned):  You okay?

Marcy:  NOOOOOOOO. I’M SWEATING THROUGH MY PAWS.

Cynthia (panicking):  That’s a bad sign. What can I do?

Marcy:  Turn on the air conditioning already!

Cynthia (panicking even more):  We don’t have air conditioning.

Marcy (still yelling):  Fine. Then. Do This!

Cynthia frantically runs around doing all of the things Marcy suggests for keeping kitties cool during the summer heat.

1. Turn on the fans.

2. Put a pan of ice in front of the fan.

3. Block out the sun by closing the blinds.

4. Fill up a plastic bottle with water/Freeze it/Wrap it in a towel/Put it in my kitty bed.

5. Elevate my kitty bed so air passes under it.

6. Put ice cubes in my water dish.

7. Throw ice cubes on the floor so I can play with them and drink the water as they melt.

8. Rub me with a damp washcloth or paper towel or even your own damp hands.

9. Make sure to brush me so I don’t get matted fur which traps in the heat.

10. Consider getting the fur shaved on my stomach since that is a place where I heat up.

In record time, Cynthia completes every task except number 10. She grabs her car keys.

Cynthia:  Okay, let’s go to the groomer’s to get your tummy shaved.

Marcy cools off in front of the fan whilst cradling an ice cube.

Marcy:  Are you crazy? That look was so last year.

Oh really cute…great ideas! So, I just got offered a job in san fracisco…SCREAM!!!! 🙂 I went apt hunting and none of the places have central AC, so I will be using these soon (on a selfish note i wud hate to shave a kitties' tummy…thats the best part 🙂 ) On a sad note, I had the unfortunate luck to see someone leave their kitty on the porch, in full sun in the summer of phoenix! By the time I saw the cat it was already foaming at the mouth. I raced over to the leasing office and by the time we got back to the unit, the idiot owner was back. Later I found out that the cat didn't make it. 🙁 What an idiot…It truly breaks my heart that someone could be so stupid and thoughtless, so this is such an important message to send to think about your kitties temperature. Thanks!

Super duper congrats on a new job in San Francisco!! That is so exciting! Woo Hoo! I lived there for a year and it rarely got warm so I bet you will be fine. Besides, nothing compares to the heat of Arizona I bet! Ugh, terrible story about the kitty. Yikes… so sad…

Hey Marcy! Try being an Old English Sheepdog in Dallas, TX! Those are all really good suggestions and the same things your Aunt Patty does for me 🙂 In my younger days would go running in 98 degree weather.

I think I'll use some of these tips for myself. Well, maybe not the belly shaving part. But the ice cubes on the floor… hmmm…

Bucky Katt (Get Fuzzy cartoon) was shaved by the angry ferrets next door and now he's forced to wear a hoodie to conceal this bad haircut. So, yes, Marcy, stay away from the barber shop. A hoodie is hotter than fur.

Oh how funny! I haven't read Get Fuzzy in a while. I obviously need to go back and read them. Poor Bucky. I don't like those ferrets. I hope Satchel is making fun of him though.

Satchel is so sweet, he lent Bucky the hoodie.

When I was a little girl, I would pour water in my bed and soak the sheets. It has been so hot this week, I have thought of doing that to my pillow. I hope Marcy is staying cool but not hogging all of the air from poor Penelope Kitten! And I hope you are staying cool yourself!

Jenni! Did you get sick by doing that when you were a kid?
Marcy is not hogging the air thank goodness. She and Penelope Kitten are keeping their distance.

My pup used to be all about the fallen ice cubes on the floor – she used to love to crunch those things. Now that she's a "big girl" she no longer digs the cubes, but I've seen some folk freeze broth for pupsicles and I may try that.

    • Reply MarcyVeryMuch July 15, 2014 at 7:40 am

Interesting! I had never heard of freezing broth. I'll have to tell my dog parent friends about that one.

      how about some frozen friskies!

Genius! I don't have a cat, but some of these tips would have been great for Jazzy, too. When we lived in Michigan, our house didn't have air conditioning. We would spend days downstairs in the basement, laying on the cool wood floors. Or we'd take trips in the car just to be in the air conditioning. The ice pan in front of the fan and the freezer bottle in the crate are great tips and much less pathetic than stretching out across the floor!

Did you see Lisa's comment above about freezing broth for dogs? I bet Jazzy would love that.
I would love to have a cool wood floor to stretch out on. That sounds really nice, actually! So many places in Los Angeles don't have air conditioning either. At least on the west side where I am. It only used to be a problem a few days out of the year but now it is unbearable for weeks at a time. I feel so bad for my cats with their fur coats.

That is a cute picture of Marcy! These are some great tips. The ice cubes are a great idea!
By the way, feel free to send some nice weather and sunshine up the coast. We are having dreary weather.
    Thanks,

Oh no! I lived in San Francisco for a year and couldn't believe that they didn't have a summer. It was ghastly. Hope the sun shines through soon!

Great tips. Luckily for my two kitties, it never gets ridiculously hot here (I guess something has to make up for the -30 C winters…)

    • Reply MarcyVeryMuch July 16, 2014 at 5:01 am

Aaaaacckkkk! I don't know which is worse. Extreme heat or extreme cold. Hmmmm… both I guess. I hope your cats have thick fur! Very glad you are staying cool this summer!
