At the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books

3pm Saturday Afternoon. 1 Week Before The LA Times Festival of Books.

Cynthia is fretting over her inventory list. She is knee deep in books, boxes, and Marcy Merch.

Penelope Kitten is leaping off boxes towards the ceiling. She continually crashes to the ground, scattering, books, boxes, and Marcy Merch.

Cynthia: Every year I bring more and more Marcy merchandise and every year we sell out. It is especially impossible to not run out of our “books and cats” book bags and cat rings.

Penelope leaps, misses the ceiling, and lands on Cynthia’s head.

They both topple over and land face first in a pile of their handmade cat friendship bracelets, Penelope Witch Pins, and “Hell No Kitty” book bags.

Cynthia: Penelope! What are you doing?

penelope kitten (squeaking): i wanna dance on the ceiling.

Cynthia: Why?!

penelope kitten: it’s more fun than running with the night and less work than being a ballerina girl.

Cynthia: Oh! That’s right. Lionel Richie is going to be at the book festival next weekend. Pat Benatar, Fab Five Freddy, and Debbie Gibson are also speaking on panels. It’s gonna be a cornucopia of 1980’s pop culture fun. Although if Marcy were here she would eschew the ’80’s and sneak into her idol, Larry David’s panel.

Marcy (from atop the Rainbow Bridge): I am here.

Cynthia (looking up): Hey Marcy, can you check to see if I can I can steal away from my booth to hear Debbie Gibson speak? I was part of her Electric Youth back in the day, you know.

Marcy: Only in your dreams.

Penelope leaps, misses the ceiling, and lands on a pile of books which scatter across the room. Including her latest book debuting at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books next weekend. April 18 + 19 on the USC Campus.
