Marcy enters to find Cynthia looking a little freaked out.
Marcy: You look a little freaked out. What gives?
Cynthia: I’m not sure. I had a routine blood test and the results are that I’m possibly… prediabetic.
Marcy: That’s awesome!
Cynthia (sharply): What?
Marcy: Prediabolical is great. It means you’re almost diabolical. Way to go, Cindy. I didn’t think you had it in you.
Cynthia: Prediabetic. It means I’ve got too much sugar … or carbohydrates…or something. I don’t know. I have to see the doctor about it.
Marcy (knowingly): It’s because you don’t eat meat. If you ate Friskies instead of pasta and grape nuts and cookies you wouldn’t be in this fix.
Cynthia (annoyed): I’m not eating meat, Marcy. But you’re right, I have been eating too many cookies lately.
Marcy: If you ate Friskies then –
Cynthia (snapping): I’m not eating meat!
Marcy: Okay. No need to be crabby.
Cynthia: I’ll just cut back on the carbs, eliminate sugar, and exercise more until I can find out what the deal is. Maybe it’s just a blip.
Marcy: So what will you eat?
Cynthia: Vegetables.
Marcy: And?
Cynthia (cranky): I don’t know, Marcy. Vegetables. I eat a lot of them anyway. I’ll just… you know… eat more.
Marcy: More? You already eat enough lettuce and carrots that I worry the rabbits of the world are going hungry.
Cynthia: Yeah right. As if you worry about the welfare of rabbits.
Marcy: Now, if you ate … meat, I would recommend Friskies. It’s by far the –
Cynthia (diabolically): I … will not. Eat meat.
I will figure out how to be a vegetarian and stay healthy at the same time. So. Are you going to help me with this?
Marcy: As long as I don’t have to eat anything green. Yuck.
Cynthia (suddenly brightening): You know, this could be an interesting journey. C’mon. Let’s see what’s in our kitchen and count those carbs.
Marcy and Cynthia trot off to the kitchen to do some investigating.
Marcy: And I’ll count Friskies cans.

I hope everything works out. Have had those scary test results, too. In fact, I need to go back in soon and bloodwork to make sure everything is still okay. I am sure yours will be fine. You look great in those jeans, by the way. I love prediabolical. You made me laugh even when I was worried about you. That salad looks delicious. Please let me know what happens. I am thinking of you. And I kind of want to know how many Friskies cans Marcy counted. : )

Thank you, Jenni. It certainly is weird. I'm not that freaked out but I have been looking at my diet more closely so that's always a good thing.

Bummer! That's frustrating because you feel like you're doing a health-conscious and animal-conscious thing by not eating meat, but it throws off your diet and and moves you into pre-diabetic territory?! There are no easy answers because everyone's body, diet, and how their body processes that diet is different. We just watched Food, Inc. the other night, and while we've been conscious about meat safety for the past several years, that film really threw things into sharp relief. We need to get back in the habit of buying meat from farmer's markets. Thankfully we only eat meat a couple of times a week, but it's an area where we could still make smarter choices. But what's scary is that our vegetables are now at risk because of poor meat production practices, too. It can be overwhelming because while being mindful of one thing like fat, you might be ignoring other important things like protein and nutrients. It's a lot to balance, and I always dread those test results. Hopefully your doctor gave you some direct tips on what to eat more/less of? Because I'd hate for you to turn to Friskie's as a last ditch effort…lol

Oh yes – I agree completely! It is so confusing. And I consider myself a pretty savvy food person. One of my husband's clients is a nutritionist even. Sugar does affect me badly and I have been eating too much of it lately. It seems once I start, I get addicted and want it all the time. And yet, I feel best when I don't eat it. Vegetables becoming contaminated due to meat production is scary. I was buying peaches last night and the cashier warned me that there was a recall due to lysteria and did I really want them. Of course my answer was NO! Yikes. I'm too scared to watch Food Inc. You are brave. I will try not to turn to Friskies. Marcy probably wouldn't want to share anyway!

I like what Liz wrote, especially about the balance. My blood test results last month pointed out that I have low vitamin D, so I could use more sun. It also mentioned that my cholesterol is a "little" high. The doctor was not that worried but things were pointed out such as soy milk instead of real milk. But lately do to stress from peri menopause, I seem too skinny and have been using half and half on my oatmeal as an example to put on weight.
As far as meat, I am focusing on only grass fed beef, the chicken has to be free range, cage free eggs, etc.
Now I cannot wait until I see my Gynecologist next week so we can make a plan of action.
So basically from the other blogger's responses and my own experience is that blood results can be scary and annoying for all of us and we are not alone. I think that having a balance is a good plan. Like you, I love cookies, etc. and maybe we just have say, two as a treat instead of five. I love the Ocean Spray Craisins cranberry cookie recipe that does not call for as much sugar or flour. You can play around with this recipe easily. I once did rice flour and I tend to use dark chocolate chips. Important tip: Add vanilla. I think vanilla makes such a difference in baking.
Take care and thanks for sharing,
Stacey
Thank you for the baking tips! I do loooove vanilla! You are right – balance is key – and knowing very clearly what one is eating. I was replying to Liz's comment that I thought I was doing pretty well on that front. But, apparently not. I do believe that this is a good wake up call. Thank you for your thoughtful comments and advice! I do find the topic of food and nutrition and health quite fascinating.

I'm glad you aren't pre-diabolical!! 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your sugar levels….frankly I'm surprised that I'm not as well considering how much candy I eat. Maybe all the meat balanced it out…lol
Merrie – you are Wonder Woman. How on earth are you commenting when you are moving out of state in what – 4 days?!!!! I am so excited for you. Arizona sounded too hot and stifling. I can't wait to hear about your move and how you decorate your new place. Happy Travels!

Love the top and bell bottoms too!

Holy meow! How can a skinny person be prediabetic? Maybe a fully diabolical lab technician is messing with your blood samples.
Ha! Possibly. It's also possible that the whole this is a freak incident. It will be interesting to learn more.
Btw, can I steal "Holy Meow" from you sometime? Love that!
xo,cynthia
Of course. It's almost as good as prediabolical.
