It’s another Dear Marcy! Ask her anything and hope she doesn’t answer. …
Dear Marcy:
I am expected to go to several holiday parties this year. Most are work related. The problem is that I have severe social anxiety. I get scared and tongue-tied at events. Do you have any advice on how to deal with my fear? I really need to go to these parties to help advance my career.
Sincerely,
Festivally Fearful
Dear Socially Inept,
Don’t go. Why bother? You’ll just say something stupid and panic about it for days afterwards.
Or, you’ll come home to find spinach in your front tooth from the quiche apps your scarfed down (hey – free food, I get it) and then panic for days afterwards about why no one told you about it and if all your co-workers do in fact, hate you.
Or, even worse, you’ll drink too much chardonnay, wake up in the janitors’ closet the next morning, have to do the walk of shame to your cubicle all while panicking about why you can’t get the image of yourself singing an Air Supply love song to a mop during the company’s karaoke hour.
Staying at home with a bottle of wine, a Bridget Jones’s Diary movie, and your 10 cats is a much better plan for your career advancement.
You’re welcome,
Marcy

I agree, staying home is a good option. But if you are required to go, find a person who looks as uncomfortable as you feel and say hello. Or stand at the perimeter of a large group, clutch your glass of Chardonnay, smile and nod knowingly but don’t speak.
Ohhhh… love the advice about smiling and nodding knowingly! I’m going to try that next time! Thank you!

The idea of staying home with wine, a movie and cats, sounds better than any other option!!

(With sincerest apologies to ‘Socially Inept.’)
I think required holiday parties (a.k.a., ‘Forced Fun’) should be outlawed. 😀
