How to help animal rescuers help the animals deep in the heart of Texas…
Tuesday, August 29th, 2017. 9am.
Marcy and Scooter, the two Texas kitties (Austin and Houston respectively), are sitting paralyzed in front of the TV watching CNN broadcast the horrific flooding in their home state.
Penelope Kitten is busy at the kitchen table placing phone calls, recruiting volunteers, and raising funds.
Hamlet is arranging transportation in between eating catnip and chasing a fly.
Marcy: I just can’t believe it won’t stop raining and flooding. What will happen to all the cats and –
Marcy bursts into sobs mid-sentence.
All the cats stare at Marcy. Wide -eyed and alarmed.
Hamlet (whispering): OMG. Is Marcy… crying?!
They all watch the terrifying sight of Marcy in tears.
After a moment, Penelope Kitten exits.
She returns wearing a snorkel and mask, a life preserver, and a donut floatie around her waist.
penelope kitten (squeaking and all business): ok. let’s go.
Marcy (sniffling): Where?
penelope kitten: houston. to rescue the pets.
Marcy (a sob catches in her throat): How?
penelope kitten (handing Marcy a tissue): the florida ferals are meeting us at the rendezvous point with airboats, and the colorado community cats are bringing friskies and blankets. let’s go go go.
She hands Marcy, Scooter, and Hamlet their ‘Harvey rescuing accoutrements’ and the four kitties march towards the front door.
Cynthia spies her four cats attempting to leave the house dressed in snorkels and masks, life preservers, and donut floaties. She barricades the door with her body.
Cynthia (panicking): No.
penelope kitten (squeaking): move aside please. we’re on a mission to rescue houston’s pets.
Cynthia: How are you even going to get there?
They all look at Hamlet expectantly.
Hamlet: The Scottish Terrier across the hall said he’d beam us up.
penelope kitten (squeaking in frustration): squeak! you had ONE job!
Cynthia (relieved): Okay. So I know you feel helpless here in Los Angeles, but the best thing for us to do is donate money to the animal rescues already mobilized and saving Houston’s pets.
♥♥Here are some of the rescues we recommend donating to – the ones we know are working tirelessly right now and need donations to continue.♥♥
- Houston Humane Society. They are actively out rescuing animals. Their shelter is dry, and other shelters around the US are beginning to take in Houston Humane’s animals to save room for the ones expected to enter the shelter in the coming days. Check out their Facebook page for updates and their Amazon wish list for in-kind donations too.
- Austin Pets Alive! is helping with evacuations in Houston. They are extremely organized and are anticipating an influx of several hundred animals over the next 24-72 hours. They need long term fosters too.
- Best Friends. They deployed their disaster response team and vehicles to Texas. Check out this video of the Code 3 Associates – and their fleet of boats and aquatic vehicles, and 80-foot semi-truck that are dedicated to saving animals.
- SPCA of Texas. (Dallas). They are taking in cats from Corpus Christi and expecting more from Houston. Long term fosters are also needed.

Hamlet tentatively approaches Marcy.
Hamlet: Hey Marcy, are you still feeling sad and teary-eyed?
Marcy whaps Hamlet across the head.
Marcy: No. And those weren’t tears. Those were raindrops.

This brought some raindrops to my eyes 🙁 How sweet, I can just picture the kitties in their scuba outfits. Thank you for posting this. It is wonderful that so many people are stepping up and focusing efforts on the animals. They are truly helpless.

It’s so awful, and my heart goes out to these families who had to leave their pets behind. The stories coming out of Houston are just heart-breaking, and I really appreciate this thorough roundup of ways to help. I’m going to pull Kyle aside during our lunch break and find one to donate to. Thanks for making it easy to help by providing this great list of resources! You are awesome!
