Thursday evening. Cynthia is juggling two armfuls of groceries and trying to push open a stuck front door with her shoulder.
Cynthia: Ugh. It’s California. Why is it so humid this door … is … stuck! Aaackkk –
The door suddenly jerks open and she stumbles inside, then immediately slips on a pile of paper. The grocery bags go flying while Cynthia lands face first in a vat of watercolor paint.
She lifts her head which is dripping in cerulean blue, burnt sienna, and sap green pigments to find that Marcy and Penelope have covered the entire living room with watercolor paint palettes and numbered sheets of paper art canvases.
Cynthia: What just happened?
penelope kitten (squeaking): oops. so sorry.
Marcy: Our Etsy order arrived while you were out. We’re picking out the best cat paint-by-number kits for our “Summer of Whimsy” series. We have to try them out. Obviously.
penelope kitten: i’m posting first with a black cat theme. obvi.
Cynthia (spitting out imperial violet): But in the middle of the living room?!
Marcy: I need some metallic gold paint. It’s on your face.
Marcy dabs her paintbrush onto the metallic gold paint on Cynthia’s cheek.
penelope kitten: don’t worry. it’ll come out. it’s watercolor.

Yet along the way she befriends all kinds of critters, from crazy condors to gung-ho gators to daffy dolphins.

Wow! Painting by numbers! I haven’t done that since I was a kid.
They’re all so cute that I’m tempted but I don’t think I have the patience.
I’m better at painting a 9 by 12 wall with a big fuzzy roller.
I think I’d be better at the paint by numbers than the crochet or embroidery. Thinking about painting an entire wall just makes me sleepy.
