“I Want To Draw A Cat For You” Goes Hollywood (and/or Broadway)

Steve Gadlin and Cynthia

Cynthia: One of the highlights of the Los Angeles Feline Film Festival this past September was meeting the sweet silly super Steve Gadlin of I Want To Draw A Cat For You fame.

Marcy (snickering):  Are you two related?

Cynthia (puzzled):  No.

Marcy:  Are you sure?

Cynthia:  Yes. Why?

Marcy:  Uh yeah. So did you actually look at that photo?!  You look like twins. Or did everybody at that crazy cat festival wear cat shirts, glasses, and cat ears?

Cynthia:  But Steve isn’t wearing cat ears.

Marcy (disgusted):  Sigh. Forget it. Hey! Did you get my drawing?

Cynthia:  Yes! I spent about a minute telling Steve about you and then in about 2 minutes he drew this –

Cynthia:  A Marcy fashion cat. Complete with black eye patch and purse. Whoopy!

Marcy purrs.

Cynthia:  Steve was one of the most successful contestants on Shark Tank last year. He convinced Mark Cuban to give him $25,000 to expand his already successful cat drawing business. And this year he started filming Steve Gadlin’s Star Makers, a Chicago based talent show.

Steve Gadlin is one of those entrepreneurs you really root for. He’s kind, quirky, enthusiastic, and just…  goes for it. I mean, not many people could make a lucrative business out of drawing stick figure cats.

Cynthia:  Oooohhhhh… if he’s at CatCon LA this June, I’m totally going to get a Penelope Kitten drawing too.

penelope kitten:  totes!

Marcy:  Or you could order one off of his website. Duh.

Cynthia:  Well, looks like he is taking a break from drawing cats, so we’ll sing his cat song instead.

Sing it with me kitties!

I Want To Draw A Cat For You

Cynthia and Penelope Kitten dance around and sing.

Marcy stalks off.

Cynthia:  Where are you going, Marcy?

Marcy:  Litterbox.

Marcy secretly logs onto the computer and furtively fills out an application to be on Steve Gadlin’s Star Makers.  She hits “send”.

Marcy (triumphantly):  I’m gonna be a STAR!

Happy Cat People: Los Angeles Feline Film Festival

Me and Tamar of I Have Cat

Cynthia:  So Marcy, it’s been almost a week since the Los Angeles Feline Film Festival came to town.

Marcy:  So you’ve finally calmed down and are going to bore us with a summary?

Cynthia:  So… yes.

Marcy:  Hang on while I get some catnip to dull the pain.

Cynthia waits while Marcy eats her catnip.

Marcy:  Okay. So what are your thoughtful thoughts?

Cynthia:  Just this. I have never in my life been in a place…With so many people… Who were all so happy… At the same time. And all because… Of cats. I can’t get over it.

Marcy:  Whatever. So did you meet Lil Bub and her dude, Mike?

Cynthia:  I did.

Marcy:  Gasp! Did you ask him if I could be his kitty?

Cynthia:  Funny you should ask. Everyone is in love with Mike. I can’t tell you how many of our readers wanted to know if Mike was single. Well, he told me he’s not. He’s engaged! He said he met his fiancee the same day that Lil Bub met Grumpy Cat! (Super happy for you, Mike!)

Marcy:  I’m not surprised. Mike is cute, sweet, has bad ass tattoos and a recording studio, adores his cats, and raises money for cat rescue. He’s the kind of guy girls go gaga over.

Cynthia:  All of the money Mike gets for his Meet-n-Greets goes to cat rescue. You should have seen the line to get in to see Lil Bub. It was hours long. I’ve never seen anything like it. And the merchandise they were selling was going quick quick quick.

Marcy (greedily):  We need to start working on our own cat tshirts.

Cynthia:  Marcy, everyone was so smiley and so giddy. And so eager to talk about their love of cats or what cute cat attire they had on, or what cute cats they had in their arms.

Cute Guy with Cute Kittens

Cynthia:  There were cat art vendors, cat cafe startups, cat face painters, cool cat supply vendors, and most importantly; loads of cat rescue groups adopting out cats and giving out information on TNR (trap/neuter/return) and other resources.

I got a drawing of you, Marcy, from Steve of I Want To Draw A Cat For You. He’s another one who was busy all day long.

Marcy:  Awesome. We need to do a separate post about that later.

Cynthia:  I got to meet the stars of the cat world and some of my own favorite and inspirational bloggers and cat website owners. Every single person I met was happy to be spending their Sunday amongst cat people. And, many people I talked to agreed that this cat fanaticism isn’t a passing fad. It’s here to stay…

Cynthia trails off, lost in thought.

Marcy:  So? Is that it?

Cynthia (confused):  Well. Yes. Maybe I’m not thinking clearly because I am still so bowled over by the energetic happy creative vibe that the festival generated. I mean… people love cats so much that it really does alter their chemistry. You can feel it. There’s something to that. Sorry, I know I’m not making any sense.

Marcy (wide-eyed):  It makes perfect sense.

Marcy excitedly gets up to leave the room.

Cynthia:  Where are you going?

Marcy:  I have to call the Mothership and tell them that cats are thisclose to total world domination. I think sending Lil Bub to help hypnotize you humans helped greatly. And, possibly give the CATBEL PRIZE to the guy who invented the internet which enabled you humans to stare at cat videos for hours on end.

Marcy rushes off to call the spaceship. Or something.

It’s 10 pm on Sunday evening. Three hours past Friskies o’clock. Marcy stares at the front door, glowering and whipping her tail back and forth.

At 10:05 pm Cynthia bursts through the door with a bagful of cat loot and an iPhone full of pictures.

Cynthia (hysterically):  Marcy! The Los Angeles Feline Film Festival was even more awesome than expected!

Marcy:  Oh yeah.

Cynthia:  Yeah! It was… epic! Just…epic!

Cynthia hurriedly fumbles for her phone while talking a mile a minute.

Cynthia:  OMG. You should have seen all of the cat outfits. I was going to do a proper post first about the festival but I can’t wait. Let’s look at all the cute cat attire right now.

Cynthia drops her phone.

Cynthia:  Oops.

Marcy:  How about you get a grip. How about you feed me first.

Cynthia:  Here – snack on this. Cynthia throws Marcy a treat packet. Natural Balance was there handing out yummy cat food samples.

Cynthia retrieves her phone and enthusiastically shoves it in Marcy’s face.

Cynthia:  Check out. These. Awesome Cat Outfits!

Cynthia:  Everyone was so cute. And so friendly. And so … happy.  Maybe instead of giving people Prozac, doctors should prescribe Puddy Cats!

Marcy rushes to hide under the couch.

Cynthia:  What’s wrong?

Marcy:  Those are the scariest pictures I’ve ever seen.

Cynthia:  Really? Why?

Marcy:  I thought you were alone in your insanity.

Cynthia:  Nope, Marcy. There are thousands and thousands and thousands of us crazy cat people out there. I think we are going to make the world a happier place. One cat at a time.

Marcy:  And armed in cat ears?

Cynthia:  Yes!

Marcy:  Oh my gatos.
