Styling The Wives Of Pancho Villa (Marta Portillo as Soledad)

Marta Portillo as Soledad in Telenovela Wives of Pancho Villa

Cynthia:  Here we are at Part 3 of our Styling The Wives Of Pancho Villa blog post series. Today we feature the sweet, lovely, awesomely talented, Marta Portillo, playing the vain and excitable, Soledad (Wife #3).

Marcy:  Gasp! She’s so pretty. Does she need a kitty? I’ll be her kitty too!

Cynthia:  Calm down, Marcy. You’re not going anywhere.

I wanted to keep the dusky pink theme going with the wives and this dress was perfect for the young and carefree Soledad. The dress and the necklace are both Forever 21 items.

Cynthia:  Originally we put this dress on Dona Luz. And while it looked fantastic on Kazandra as well, it just wasn’t right for her character. Dona Luz, as the first wife, needed to be sophisticated and command respect.

But Soledad, as the youngest and most recent wife, needed to look like she was on a beach vacation and having the time of her life with the love of her life.

Marcy: Pancho’s so handsome. And that’s an impressive ‘stache.

Cynthia:  That’s Achilles Molina. He’s our Pancho Villa! And he’s perfect as Pancho. More on Pancho later! So that’s it. Nothing snarky or mean to say today, Marcy? I’m surprised.

Marcy:  Your exuberance, mushiness, and grating niceness must be rubbing off on me. I need a bath. I’ll be back in full Mean Marcy mode tomorrow.

Cynthia (sarcastically):  Great.

Marcy:  You’re welcome.

Styling The Wives Of Pancho Villa (Kazandra Santana as Dona Luz)

Kazandra Santana as Dona Luz in
Telenovela Wives of Pancho Villa

Cynthia:  Yay! Our show, Telenovela Wives of Pancho Villa, by Jeffery Atik, has opened to sold out audiences!

Marcy:  Whatever. Let’s talk costumes.

Cynthia:  We spent $300 costuming thirteen actors. It’s a mix of the actors’ own clothes, thrift shop finds, and Forever 21.

The year is 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. The play is a fictionalized satire of the lives of Pancho Villa’s many wives done in the Telenovela style. Think soap opera, comedy, high drama, intrigue, and The Real Housewives shows.

Dona Luz, who was Pancho Villa’s first wife, is the heart of the show.

Cynthia:  Our Dona Luz is played by the super talented Kazandra Santana.

Kazandra Santana

Cynthia:  Kazandra as Dona Luz was my first outfit find and we built the show around this costume.

Top and Skirt from Forever 21

I was lucky that Forever 21 has long skirts and old fashioned type tops that are lightweight and inexpensive. And sexy. Our idea was to evoke 1914, not literally translate it with period costumes. It is a Telenovela after all!

This dusky pink was perfect and Kazandra looks elegant and beautiful. The belt is her own and gave the outfit a rustic element.

Kazandra Santana brings such depth, grace, humor, outrage, conniving, and sexiness to her role that I am sure the real life Dona Luz would be thrilled to pieces.

Marcy:  I don’t know. The real life Dona Luz looks pretty fierce. She doesn’t look like the kind of lady who would be thrilled to pieces about anything.

Cynthia:  She does seem pretty formidable in this photo. Hey! Maybe she needs a cat.

Marcy:  Well. Obviously.
